Nichollssaura was named by Druckenmiller and Russell (2009) ["The generic name for Nichollsia borealis (Druckenmiller and Russell, 2008) is therefore corrected to Nichollssaura (gender; feminine). The full species name becomes Nichollssaura borealis."]. Its type is Nichollssaura borealis.

It was assigned to Leptocleididae by Ketchum and Benson (2010) and Benson and Druckenmiller (2014).
