Anisaster was named by Pomel (1886).

It was reranked as Agassizia (Anisaster) by Cooke (1942), Cooke (1959), Fischer (1966) and Kier (1980); it was misspelled as Anisaser by Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Agassizia by Cooke (1942), Cooke (1959), Fischer (1966) and Kier (1980); and to Spatangoida by Sepkoski (2002).
