Palaeopteria was named by Whiteaves (1897) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l O u Sepkoski's reference number: 1233]. It is not extant. Its type is Palaeopteria parvula.
It was assigned to Pterineidae by Vokes (1980); to Pteriniidae by Cope (1996); and to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002).
