Taxonomy
Plicatostylus was named by Lupher and Packard (1930) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. Its type is Plicatostylus gregarius. It is the type genus of Plicatostylidae.

It was synonymized subjectively with Lithiotis by Ros-Franch et al. (2014).

It was assigned to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Plicatostylidae by Lupher and Packard (1930), Bouchet et al. (2010).
