Pterinopectinella was named by Newell (1938) [Sepkoski's age data: C Serp-l P Guad-l Sepkoski's reference number: 524]. Its type is Pterinopectinella welleri.
It was assigned to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); to Pterinopectinidae by Newell and Boyd (1995), Amler (2010); and to Pterinopectinellinae by Bouchet et al. (2010).
