Spanila was named by Barrande (1881) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl-u S Ludl].

It was assigned to Lunulacardiidae by Vokes (1980); to Pterioida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Spanilidae by Kříž (2007) and Bouchet et al. (2010).
