Pessopteryx was named by Wiman (1910). It is not extant.
It was synonymized subjectively with Omphalosaurus by Maisch and Matzke (2000); it was considered a nomen dubium by McGowan and Motani (2003).
It was assigned to Omphalosauridae by von Huene (1951); and to Merriamosauridae by Maisch (2010).
