Ophthalmosaurus discus was named by Marsh (1879). Its type specimen is YPM 1955 and is not a trace fossil.
It was recombined as Sauranodon discus by Marsh (1880); it was recombined as Baptanodon discus by Hay (1902), Gilmore (1905) and Gilmore (1905).
