Platypterygius platydactylus

Taxonomy

Ichthyosaurus platydactylus was named by Broili (1907). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ricklinger Moor, Castendamm, which is in an Aptian marine horizon in Germany. It is the type species of Platypterygius.

It was recombined as Platypterygius platydactylus by Maisch and Matzke (2000), McGowan and Motani (2003), Kolb and Sander (2009), Maisch (2010), Ji et al. (2016).

Synonyms

Ichthyosaurus hercynicus was named by Kuhn (1946). Its type specimen is SMSS, a partial skeleton (Partial skull, vertebral column, partial pectoral girdle, two forefins and parts of the hindfins), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Pit "Gitter", Salzgitter, which is in an Aptian marine mudstone in Germany.

It was synonymized subjectively with Platypterygius platydactylus by McGowan and Motani (2003); it was recombined as Platypterygius hercynicus by Kuhn (1946), Kuhn (1946), Maisch and Matzke (2000), Kolb and Sander (2009), Maisch (2010), Fischer (2012), Fischer et al. (2013), Arkhangelsky and Zverkov (2014), Ji et al. (2016).
