Paterimitra pyramidalis

Tommotiida

Taxonomy
Paterimitra pyramidalis was named by Laurie (1986) [Species comprise three sclerite types: S1, S2, L.]. Its type specimen is Australian Geological Survey Organisation, Commonwealth Palaeontological Collection (Canberra) CPC23676, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is NT 600. Todd River, 50 km south, 20 km East of Alice Springs, which is in an Atdabanian/Botomian reef, buildup or bioherm limestone in the Todd River Dolomite Formation of Australia.

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
C. M. Larsson et al. 2014Emended diagnosis. As for genus by monotypy.
Emended diagnosis (Paterimitra<\i>. Sclerites microscopic, apatitic by original composition, growing via basal-internal accretion. Scleritome comprising at least three clearly distinctive sclerite types: symmetrical sclerite types S1 and S2 and laterally compressed asymmetrical L sclerites. S1 sclerites pyramidal with posterior triangular notch and U-shaped anterior plate. S2 sclerites concave and acutely triangular. External surface with micro-ornament consisting of polygonal compartments. Scleritome consisting of one S2 sclerite nested within triangular notch of one S1 sclerite; multiple L sclerites lining antapical margins in additional rows forming an open tube.
It differs from Eccentrotheca by the presence of two specialized bilaterally symmetrical sclerites in the scleritome and the distinct polygonal external micro-ornament. Differs from Kulparina by more regular and less compressed sclerite shape and the distinct polygonal external micro-ornament. Differs from Sunnaginia by the presence of individual sclerite types, the bilateral symmetry of S1 and S2 sclerites and the absence of right- and left-hand sclerite pairs, polygonal micro-ornament and the shell microstructure.
