Glyptarca was named by Hicks (1873) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l O Llde-u Sepkoski's reference number: 948,1238]. It is the type genus of Glyptarcidae.
It was assigned to Modiomorphidae by Carter (1971); to Parallelodontinae by Vokes (1980); to Modiomorphoida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Glyptarcidae by Fang (2006), Bouchet et al. (2010), Wang et al. (2025).
