Hoernesia (Strophopteria) spiralis was named by Guo (1985). Its type specimen is IVy 0148, a shell (Articulated steinkern), and it is a mold. Its type locality is Peiyuan, Yongsheng County, which is in an Induan/Olenekian marine horizon in the Lamei Formation of China.
