Trigonodus yunnanensis was named by Guo (1985). Its type specimen is IVy 0206, a valve (Right valve, internal mold), and it is a mold. Its type locality is Shanglan, Jianchuan County, which is in an Anisian marine horizon in the Shanglan Formation of China.
