Heteroschizodus was named by Newell and Boyd (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: P Sepkoski's reference number: ZR75]. Its type is Heteroschizodus macomoides.

It was assigned to Schizodidae by Newell and Boyd (1975), Mello (1999); and to Trigonioida by Sepkoski (2002).
