Sphenotrigonia was named by Rennie (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: K Haut K Albi-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1124]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Trigoniidae by Cox (1952); and to Trigonioida by Sepkoski (2002).
