Rotundopteryx hulkei was named by Maisch and Matzke (2000). Its type specimen is PMU 24590 [R298] and is a 3D body fossil.
It was considered a nomen dubium by McGowan and Motani (2003); it was recombined as Merriamosaurus hulkei by Maisch and Matzke (2002) and Maisch (2010).
