Alligator prenasalis

Crocodilus prenasalis was named by Loomis (1904). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Indian Draw (SDSM Titanothere Beds), which is in a Chadronian fluvial-lacustrine siliciclastic in the Chadron Formation of South Dakota.

It was recombined as Caimanoidea prenasalis by Hay (1930); it was recombined as Alligator prenasalis by Matthew (1918), Barbour (1926), Schmidt (1941), Brochu (1999), Snyder (2007) and Rio and Mannion (2021).

Synonyms
  • Allognathosuchus riggsi was named by Patterson (1931). Its type specimen is Field Museum P 12141, a mandible (left mandible), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Phinney Springs, which is in a Chadronian fluvial-lacustrine siliciclastic in the Chadron Formation of South Dakota.

    It was recombined as Alligator riggsi by Schmidt (1941); it was synonymized subjectively with Alligator prenasalis by Brochu (1999).
  • Caimanoidea visheri was named by Mehl (1916). Its type specimen is University of South Dakota 1,044, a partial skeleton (goodly portion of a skull, a nearly complete mandible, two femora and other limb bones, a nearly complete series of vertebrae, many dorsal scutes, and numerous ), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Caimanoidea visheri type locality, which is in a Chadronian fluvial-lacustrine siliciclastic in the Chadron Formation of South Dakota. It is the type species of Caimanoidea.

    It was recombined as Alligator vischeri by Schmidt (1941); it was synonymized subjectively with Alligator prenasalis by Higgins (1972).
