Aegirosaurus was named by Bardet and Fernandez (2000).
It was assigned to Thunnosauria by Maisch and Matzke (2000); to Ophthalmosauria by Druckenmiller and Maxwell (2010); to Platypterygiinae by Fischer et al. (2012), Arkhangelsky and Zverkov (2014) and Robert et al. (2014); and to Ophthalmosauridae by McGowan and Motani (2003), Maisch (2010), Fischer et al. (2011), Fischer et al. (2013) and Ji et al. (2016).
