Taxonomy
Mollesaurus periallus was named by Fernandez (1999). Its type specimen is MOZ 2282 V, a partial skeleton (Partial skeleton of a single individual consisting of the posterior half of the skull and part of the vertebral column comprised of 39 articulated vertebrae an), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Ophthalmosaurus periallus by Maisch and Matzke (2000) and Maisch (2010).

Differs from other members of the Family Ichthyosauridae in the following combination of characters: rostrum deep near the orbit, orbit large, postorbital region not narrow, basioccipital with a reduced extracondylar area and with two elongated and sightly concave areas placed symmetrically in the extracondylar area, nares elongate, maxillary very reduced in lateral view, teeth reduced."
