Taxonomy
Spathites rioensis was named by Powell (1963). It is not extant. Its type locality is Cannonball Hill, which is in a Turonian marine limestone in the Ojinaga Formation of Mexico.

It was recombined as Spathites (Spathites) rioensis by Kennedy and Cobban (1988).
