Plesiosaurus grandis was named by Owen (1840).

It was synonymized subjectively with Pliosaurus macromerus by Lydekker (1889); it was recombined as Pliosaurus grandis by Owen (1842), Owen (1869), Perrier (1928), Swinton (1934).
