Semionotus normanniae was named by Larsonneur (1964). Its type specimen is LCUC unreg. and is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Airel Quarry, which is in a Rhaetian/Hettangian marginal marine claystone/limestone in the Moon-Airel Formation of France.
