Neoplatyteichum numerosum was named by Waterhouse (1983). Its type specimen is UQ F63743 and is a mold. Its type locality is UQ L3702, Gebbie Creek, which is in a Wuchiapingian marine siliciclastic in the Blenheim Formation of Australia.
