Bathyurus gibberulus was named by Billings (1865). Its type specimen is GSC 660, a pygidium, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Dolichometopus gibberulus by Billings (1865); it was recombined as Benthamaspis gibberula by Fortey (1979) and Fortey and Bruton (2013).
