Thaumastophis was named by Rage et al. (2008). Its type is Thaumastophis missiaeni. It is the type genus of Thaumastophiidae.
It was assigned to Caenophidia by Rage et al. (2008); and to Thaumastophiidae by Zaher et al. (2021).
