Taxonomy
Stenacanthus nitida was named by Leidy (1856). Its type specimen is ANSP 9908, a set of limb elements, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Bothriolepis nitida by Hay (1902), Denison (1978), Thomson and Thomas (2001).
