Horiopleura was named by Douvillé (1889) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti K Ceno-m]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Caprotinidae by Palmer (1928); to Hippuritoida by Sepkoski (2002); to Horiopleuridae by Bouchet et al. (2010); and to Polyconitidae by Steuber (2002), Skelton (2013).
