Protodiceras was named by Böhm (1892) [Sepkoski's age data: J Sine J Plie Sepkoski's reference number: 92]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Megalodontidae by Cox et al. (1969); and to Hippuritoida by Sepkoski (2002).
