Mitra sowerbyi was named by d'Orbigny (1852) [DISTRIBUTION: Oligocene-Recent; Indo-Pacific.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Mitra (Chrysame) sowerbyi by Vredenburg (1925) and Mukerjee (1939); it was recombined as Cancilla sowerbyi by Harzhauser (2007); it was recombined as Chrysame sowerbyi by Harzhauser et al. (2009).
