Taxonomy
Gavialis gangeticus was named by Gmelin (1789). It is extant. It is the type species of Gavialis.

Synonyms
  • Gavialis hysudricus was named by Lydekker (1886). Its type specimen is NHMUK R.39805, a partial skull (nearly complete rostrum and partial lower jaw), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Chandigarh Pinjor Beds (general region), which is in a Pleistocene terrestrial horizon in the Pinjor Formation of India.

    It was synonymized subjectively with Gavialis gangeticus by Martin (2019).
