Hamadasuchus was named by Buffetaut (1994). Its type is Hamadasuchus rebouli.

It was assigned to Trematochampsidae by Buffetaut (1994); to Sebecia by Larsson and Sues (2007); to Peirosauridae by Turner and Sertich (2010), Pol et al. (2012), Bronzati et al. (2012), Sertich and O'Connor (2014), Pol et al. (2014), Barrios et al. (2016), Lio et al. (2016); to Peirosaurinae by Geroto and Bertini (2019); and to Peirosauridae by Nicholl et al. (2021), Pochat-Cottilloux et al. (2023).
