Chanoides was named by Woodward (1901). It is the type genus of Chanoididae.
It was assigned to Albulidae by Woodward (1901); to Ostariophysi by Patterson (1984); and to Chanoididae by Carnevale et al. (2014), Bannikov (2014), van der Laan (2019).
