Thecidea was named by Defrance (1822) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes-u Sepkoski's reference number: 147, 889]. Its type is Terebratulites papillatus. It is the type genus of Thecideidae, Thecideinae.
It was assigned to Brachiopoda by von Schauroth (1854); to Thecideida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Thecideinae by Williams et al. (2006).
