Aphanizocnemus was named by Dal Sasso and Pinna (1997). Its type is Aphanizocnemus libanensis.
It was assigned to Dolichosauridae by Dal Sasso and Pinna (1997); to Pythonomorpha by Lee and Caldwell (2000); to Pythonomorpha by Lee and Scanlon (2002); to Ophidiomorpha by Palci and Caldwell (2010); and to Dolichosauridae by Paparella et al. (2018).
