Exanthesis ovatus was named by Finks et al. (2011). It is not extant. Its type locality is USGS 22389 (Castle Hayne LS, N. Carolina), which is in a Bartonian offshore wackestone/grainstone in the Castle Hayne Formation of North Carolina.
