Macrotheca wynnei was named by Waagen (1880). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Near Katwahi, Upper Productus-limestone, Salt Range (Wynne coll), which is in a Changhsingian carbonate limestone in the Chhidru Formation of Pakistan. It is the type species of Macrotheca.
