Taxonomy
Coccosteus was named by Agassiz (1843). It is the type genus of Coccosteinae.
It was assigned to Placoganoidei by Owen (1859); to Arthrodira by Woodward (1891); to Coccosteinae by Hay (1902); and to Coccosteidae by Bryant (1932), Jordan (1963) and Denison (1978).
