Macrorhynchus meyeri was named by Dunker (1843). It is a mold. Its type locality is Harrl quarry, Bückeburg, which is in a Berriasian terrestrial sandstone in the Bückeberg Formation of Germany.
It was recombined as Pholidosaurus meyeri by Lydekker (1887).
