Kyphosichthys was named by Xu and Wu (2012). Its type is Kyphosichthys grandei. It is the type genus of Kyphosichthyidae.
It was assigned to Ginglymodi by Xu and Wu (2012); and to Kyphosichthyidae by Sun and Ni (2017), van der Laan (2019), Xu et al. (2019).
