Melocrinus was named by Agassiz (1836). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Melocrinidae, Melocrinitidae, Melocrinitacea.
It was assigned to Melocrinidae by Goldring (1936); and to Melocrinitidae by Ubaghs et al. (1978).
