Taxonomy
Ateleaspis was named by Traquair (1899) [Sepkoski's age data: S Wenl Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is the type genus of Ateleaspidae, Ateleaspidinae.

It was assigned to Ateleaspidae by Gardiner (1966); to Atelaspidiformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Ateleaspidinae by Sansom (2009); to Cephalaspidomorphi by Long (2011); and to Ateleaspididae by Tinn and Märss (2018), van der Laan (2019).
