Baphetes kirkbyi was named by Watson (1929). Its type specimen is HMG 15.69, 15.70, and 15.71, a partial skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Pirnie Colliery, which is in a Kashirian terrestrial horizon in the Parrot Coal Formation of the United Kingdom.
