Astropecten huxleyi was named by Wright (1863). Its type specimen is Holotype BNHM OR 33848 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Archastropecten huxleyi by Hess (1955); it was recombined as Pentasteria (Archastropecten) huxleyi by Hess (1987) and Lewis (1993).
