Plutonaster lithographicus was named by de Loriol (1895). Its type specimen is Holotype ML 20 015 381, Museum d'Histoire Naturelle, Lyon and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Archastropecten lithographica by Hess (1955); it was recombined as Pentasteria (Archastropecten) lithographica by Breton et al. (1994).

G. Breton et al. 1994 | R/r ratio equals to 3.5. Arms acute, with straight sides. Interbrachial sinus deep but rounded. Thirty-five pairs of marginal plates per half-arc. Marginals twice large as long in the interbrachial arc, squared near the arm tip, where marginals are tall and highly domed. One short columnar spine in the actinal side and one or two abradial spines on every inferomarginal plate. |
