Astropecten wittsii was named by Wright (1863). Its type specimen is Holotype BNHM E 1637 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Archastropecten wittsii by Hess (1955); it was recombined as Pentasteria (Archastropecten) wittsii by Lewis (1993).
