Tethyaster jurassicus was named by Blake (1986). Its type specimen is Holotype USNM 382601, Paratype USNM 382602 and is a 3D body fossil.

D. B. Blake 1986Tethyaster with relatively short arms, broad at the bases. Paxillae relatively short, stout, bearing a cluster of 7-9 spinelets. Carinal paxillae enlarged, transversely elongate. Madreporite large, located near to edge of abactinal field. Intermarginal channels relatively shallow; larger inferomarginal spines conical, with pointed tips.
