Geosaurus suevicus was named by Fraas (1901). Its type specimen is SMNS 9808, a skeleton (complete skeleton preserved in limestone), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Cricosaurus suevicus by Young and Andrade (2009), Bronzati et al. (2012), Young et al. (2013), Parrilla-Bel and Canudo (2015).
