Pholidophorus pachysomus was named by Egerton (1852). Its type specimen is BMNH P.571, a skeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Lyme Regis, Egerton collection, which is in a Sinemurian marine horizon in the United Kingdom.
