Voay was named by Brochu (2007) [Replacement genus for "Crocodylus" robustus based on neotype MCZ 1006.].

It was assigned to Osteolaeminae by Brochu (2007); to Crocodylinae by Hekkala et al. (2021); and to Osteolaeminae by Rio and Mannion (2021).
