Pecten thetidis was named by Sowerby (1850) [TYPE SPECIMEN: Lectotype used for type specimen.]. Its type specimen is BMNH LL11355, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Pecten (Aequipecten) thetidis by Maury (1917), Cooke (1919); it was recombined as Chlamys thetidis by Woodring (1925), Mongin (1968); it was recombined as Aequipecten thetidis by Pflug (1961); it was recombined as Argopecten thetidis by Waller (2011).
